5 Jeans In Every French Girl's Denim Capsule Wardrobe

Take a trip to Paris in the fall or winter, and you’ll likely find one clothing item on 95% of the city’s well-dressed locals: a pair of jeans. Of course, an appreciation for denim isn’t something just French girls possess, but they do have a tendency to, one, wear the best pairs, and two, style them in that effortless way that so many around the world try (and often fail) to mimic. There’s a French phrase for it, but I try to avoid clichés. You know the one.

Fortunately, I had some time this week, and I spent it scrolling through all my favorite French fashion accounts in search of the denim trends (and anti-trends) that live inside their capsule wardrobes. The French aren’t ones to overconsume or own 50+ pairs of jeans. They find the right pairs and stick with them, wearing them on repeat in different outfit combinations, so don’t fret—I’m not going to tell you to buy ten or more styles all in one go. Really, there are five styles I see the most, and most, if not all, of them are available at a wide range of prices. Anyone can achieve that French-girl-in-jeans look, and these five trends are the key.

Vintage 501s

Not only can you source some of the best vintage Levi’s 501s in Paris, but you can also find elite ways to style them on the streets of the city. Its locals always seem to have found that perfect pair—the ones that fit at the waist and the butt and have faded just so, like they were genuinely worked in and left to dry post-wash on a windowsill in Biarritz. Interestingly enough, Paris’s ties with the 501 style go way back. Levi’s brought them to the French capital in the 1930s, sending them down the runway at a show spotlighting American fashion.

Classic White

Another jeans style I always see French girls wear is white denim, and not just in the summer. If you love your jeans, why would you only wear them for three months out of the year? Instead, classic white jeans with zero stretch and a straight or slightly more fitted cut are taken from one season to the next, styled with sandals, ballet flats, loafers, and heeled ankle boots. A great way to take them from beachy to sophisticated is to add a black belt. I prefer one with gold hardware personally, but you do you.

The New Bootcut

Bootcut jeans aren’t as prevalent in France as the first two styles are, but their presence is growing rapidly, with new styles quickly growing roots among chic women across the country. The trick to getting them right? Opt for low- to mid-rise silhouettes in darker rinses. As for styling, stiletto boots or heels with a sharp heel will always look high-end. Keep your outfit simple with a black boatneck tee or fitted sweater that shows off a touch of midriff while still maintaining an air of sophistication and elegance.

Indigo jeans are everywhere right now, not just in Paris, but whenever a new denim trend arrives (or an old one returns), I like to look there first for inspiration. Specifically, I check out Sylvie Mus’s page. She has a way of making all denim look expensive and polished. With indigo jeans, she’s wearing sleeveless turtlenecks, leather jackets, and lightweight ivory knits. Follow her lead. In terms of footwear, dark brown or black leather flats, heels, and boots will work every time.

Khaki jeans are the IYKYK style that you should absolutely have on your wishlist or in your wardrobe for fall 2026.
