Prince William Speaks Fluent Welsh in Video to Mark St David’s Day: Watch

Prince William is marking St. David’s Day with a special message.

On Saturday, March 1, a new video was released on the Kensington Palace X account of the Prince of Wales, 42, speaking in fluent Welsh to mark the national day of celebration for Wales.

An English translation of the clip reveals Prince William said, “Today, on St. David’s Day, we come together to celebrate Wales — its history, its culture, and its incredible people.”

“From its breathtaking landscapes to its language, Wales continues to inspire. Today, we will celebrate everything that is magical about Wales. To the people of Wales and everybody around the world, Happy St David’s Day,” he concludes.  

The video message also included footage of Prince William and Kate Middleton greeting fans who were holding Welsh flags and gifting daffodils.

PEOPLE understands that Prince William is not having formal lessons in the language, though he is learning conversational Welsh. He also regularly uses the language to greet people whenever he visits Wales. 

Prince William’s latest message shared in honor of the country comes after he and Princess Kate, 43, traveled to South Wales in the run-up to the national holiday on Wednesday, Feb. 26. 

The royal couple journeyed by train to Wales as Princess Kate continued her tradition of flag dressing, wearing a vibrant red coat to represent one of the colors on the Welsh flag.

They then traveled to Pontypridd, where they spoke with the locals affected by the severe storms that hit the town in December 2024. 

While in the area, the Prince and Princess of Wales dropped by The Welsh Cake Shop and put on aprons as they learned more about scone-like cakes — the pair even took part in kneading and rolling the dough during their baking lesson.

Shop owner Theresa Conner told PEOPLE the visit was “a dream come true.” She added that the Prince and Princess of Wales were “personable and friendly and down to earth, they were really lovely.”

Prince William and Kate have a deep connection with Wales as they resided on Anglesey for the first years of their marriage. They were also given the titles Prince and Princess of Wales after Queen Elizabeth’s death and King Charles’ accession in 2022. 

Prince William and Kate’s royal trip marks their second joint royal engagement of the year, after attending a Holocaust Memorial Day service together in London on Jan. 27.

Princess Kate made an impromptu appearance after announcing earlier in the month she is in “remission” from cancer after undergoing treatment last year.
