From the Frontline to the Spotlight: How One Army Captain Became a Media Queen.

From the Frontline to the Spotlight: How One Army Captain Became a Media Queen.

In celebrating Veterans Month, Glamour honors Captain Raquel Riley Thomas (Veteran), a woman who proves that courage wears many uniforms.

In a world where strength and grace often seem like opposites, Raquel Riley Thomas embodies both in perfect harmony. A decorated United States Army Captain (Veteran) turned global media powerhouse, she commands attention not with noise, but with purpose. The Hampton University graduate is the owner of An Officer and Gentlewoman, LLC (AOAGWLLC), one of the most respected media and entertainment companies in the world. Thomas has built an empire rooted in integrity, excellence, and service.

Thomas’ journey began long before red carpets and magazine covers. As a young soldier stationed in Korea, she learned one of life’s most profound lessons: respect for other cultures. “It was in Korea that I realized leadership isn’t about rank, it’s about humanity,” she recalls. That philosophy guided her through nine years of military service, where she rose to the rank of Captain, earned multiple commendations, and ultimately saw her contributions preserved in the Library of Congress, a rare distinction that cements her legacy among America’s honored veterans.

Transitioning from the battlefield to the boardroom wasn’t easy, but Thomas approached it like every mission she’d ever faced, with discipline, strategy, and faith. Today, AOAGWLLC has become a global brand synonymous with success, representing high-profile clients, securing thousands of media placements, and redefining what “white glove” public relations truly means. “I tell my clients if I can protect my country I can protect your company.”

But beyond the power suits and spotlights, Raquel embraces community service. She is six-time beauty queen titleholder and the reigning Elite Queen of the World 2025. Her crown, however, is more than a symbol of elegance, it’s a platform. Through her initiative DefendRILEY, Thomas merges her military and martial arts background to teach women and girls the principles of self-defense, confidence, and courage. “Unfortunately, my mother took her life in 2013. I found out soon-afterward that she had been assaulted at a young age. My platform is dedicated to her and it embodies empowerment,” she explains. “DefendRILEY isn’t just about fighting back physically, it’s about standing strong in every area of life.”

In an era where beauty is often mistaken for fragility, Raquel Riley Thomas reminds the world that a woman can be both a warrior and a queen. She’s living proof that resilience, service, and purpose never go out of style.

In Conversation with Raquel Riley Thomas

1. What was the turning point that inspired you to leave the Army and pursue entrepreneurship?

I realized that the same leadership and logistics skills I used in the Army could build something powerful in civilian life. I wanted to continue serving just in a different uniform. We have 4 divisions in our company, with the biggest being Public relations. I’m an optimist and I enjoy  seeing my clients win.

2. How did your time in Korea shape your outlook on leadership and global communication?

Korea changed me. It taught me humility, cultural respect, and how to lead with empathy. Those lessons became the foundation for how I run AOAGWLLC today, understanding before acting.

3. As Elite Queen of the World 2025, how do you blend pageantry with your military and martial arts background?

Pageantry, for me, is another form of service. It’s about representing strength, grace, and integrity. My military and martial arts experience give me discipline and focus, and my crown gives me a voice to reach more people.

4. What message do you hope readers take away this Veterans Month?

That service never ends. Whether I’m wearing combat boots or high heels, my mission is the same, to lead, protect, and inspire.
