OpenAI will be ready for an IPO in 2027, says Greg Brockman

OpenAI will be ready to go public in 2027, president Greg Brockman said on Wednesday. Speaking at a Wall Street Journal tech conference in Napa, California, he also said that business customers now account for most of the company’s sales, Reuters reported.

Brockman was asked on stage whether OpenAI would be ready for a listing next year.

“I think so,” he replied, according to Reuters.

Brockman gave no figure for the enterprise share, or for total revenue in the remarks Reuters reported. OpenAI has also yet to set a date for a listing.

The change in OpenAI’s sales mix follows a push to win corporate customers, where it competes most directly with Anthropic. Codex, its coding agent, has been central to that effort, and Brockman has said OpenAI wants to bring ChatGPT and Codex into one agentic platform.

Brockman’s timeline fits earlier reporting on the listing. OpenAI confidentially filed its draft prospectus with US regulators in June. Soon after, Bloomberg reported that it was weighing a 2027 stock market debut, with chief executive Sam Altman holding out for a $1tn valuation.

Since then, OpenAI has worked to raise more money while its sales grow. Earlier reports put that effort at a $30bn funding round at a valuation of about $1.4tn.

Anthropic, meanwhile, is likely to reach the stock market first. It filed confidentially for its own IPO in June, and Reuters expects it to list before the end of the year.

OpenAI’s investors include Microsoft and SoftBank. SoftBank’s shares fell as much as 13% in June, when Bloomberg first reported that the listing could slip to 2027.

Brockman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and has taken on a larger role this year, including oversight of its product teams. Earlier this year, testifying at Elon Musk’s trial against OpenAI, he confirmed the company was exploring an IPO and said his own stake was worth nearly $30bn.
