Snow Xue Gao Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear

The windows of Snow Xue Gao’s Bowery storefront are not what you typically see in a shop—they’re floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. The result is an unparalleled view of what’s happening in the neighborhood every day, which works out quite well for Gao, whose prevailing influence and inspiration will always be her local customers.

“The Bowery is having a moment,” the designer said proudly. Between cute coffee spots, the rejuvenated New Museum across the road, and the Wang Contemporary nearby, “every day on the street is like a show.”

Fittingly for a collection titled East Meets Downtown, the Parsons alum shot her spring 2027 lookbook on her own doorstep. One image outside the New Museum shows a piece that’s particularly close to Gao’s heart: her take on a traditional Chinese jacket with braided pan kou—frog—closures and a Mandarin collar.

Iterations of these versatile little outfit toppers came in two-tone mint and pistachio, velvet maroon with contrasting lilac trims, as well as a soft brown wool that will be ideal for the city’s tricky mid-season weather. A sleek, plain black version and a corporate girlie-approved gray style will go with everything from 9-5 work slacks to jeans on the weekend. "It’s rooted in Chinese culture, but it still looks very modern," Gao said.

While both pan kou detailing and quipao necklines seem to be trending broadly as of late, for Gao, it’s about reinterpreting these time-honored, traditional signatures for the muses she watches outside her window through unexpected fabrics and unique patterns. As such, you’ll find frog closures on her delightful printed denim jackets and on peplum-hemmed striped shirting. The classic cheongsam, meanwhile, was rendered into long-sleeve jersey tops.

Denim is a new category and focus for the brand, with wide-leg jeans in quirky colorways that Gao hopes will have people stopping her shoppers in the wild demanding, “Where did you get those?”

This fusion of Chinese heritage with a social media-meets-street style influence recently caught the eye of Sage Sivan; an emerging it girl and sister of the singer Troye. After purchasing a pink checkered cotton poplin qipao top, Sivan posted a video and orders from as far as Australia came flying in.

“How Sage wore it actually gave me some inspiration about mixing and matching," Gao noted. "We've been doing this East-to-West thing for almost 10 years and it really feels like now a lot of people are recognizing it, supporting us, and wanting to try this kind of style.”

As Gao spoke, a passerby outside paused to snap a photo of the mannequin up front. Those windows work both ways.
