Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘St. Denis Medical’? What to Know About the NBC Comedy’s Next Chapter

Created by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer — the same duo who worked on NBC’s Superstore and American Auto — the mockumentary-style sitcom is set in an understaffed, underfunded hospital in a small Oregon town. St. Denis Medical — which aired its season 1 finale on April 29 — humorously portrays the daily challenges faced by overworked doctors and nurses in the emergency room as they strive to care for patients.

“I’ve had many experiences in the E.R. … all of those situations had funny aspects to them,” Ledgin told Deadline in March 2025. “I wanted to [create] something that tried to capture what it’s actually like — some of the dark humor, some of the oddball humor, just the silly and the very real, humanizing things that happen.”

In January 2025, the network renewed St. Denis Medical for a second season. Ledgin said it was a “relief” that the series, which stars Wendi McLendon-Covey and Allison Tolman, resonated with viewers.

“We need to laugh together,” he told Deadline. “We need [TV shows] that are just trying to entertain, and make you forget about everything for a few minutes.”

Will there be a season 2 of St. Denis Medical? 

Yes — ahead of St. Denis Medical‘s season 1 mid-season premiere in January 2025, NBC announced that the show will return for a second season, per Deadline.

The sitcom has proven to be a hit with audiences and critics alike. After becoming NBC’s top new show in the 18-49 demographic, St. Denis Medical earned a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy Series.

Meanwhile, actor David Alan Grier — who plays a jaded veteran doctor — received a Critics Choice nod for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and an NAACP Image Award nomination.

What will St. Denis Medical season 2 be about? 

Plot details for season 2 of St. Denis Medical have not been released. However, Eric Ledgin did tease his plans for the series while speaking with Deadline in March 2025.

“I want to keep on the same course as we were on in season 1 [with] moments where we push the characters’ relationships further along. [I also want] every episode to be a story unto itself,” he said, adding, “We’ll maybe get out of the hospital a little bit more [in season 2].”

Plus, fans can expect “more romance” in future episodes, Ledgin told LRM Online in April 2025.

Who is in the cast of St. Denis Medical season 2?

It’s uncertain which cast members will return for St. Denis Medical season 2. Season 1 starred McLendon-Covey, Grier, Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper and Kaliko Kauahi.

Although their casting has not been confirmed, several of the show’s key players have spoken publicly about St. Denis Medical‘s renewal.

“It’s so wonderful,” Kauahi, who plays nurse administrator Val, told Popculture.com in March 2025. “You just never know what’s gonna happen, but from the beginning, you felt so much support from the studio and the network, but also from the fans.”

Tolman, who portrays nurse supervisor Alex, echoed the same sentiment while appearing on That Hashtag Show a month later.

“We feel so lucky. It’s such a hard time in our industry right now,” she said. “The fact that we get to go back to work soon … we feel incredibly blessed and humbled. We loved making this show, and we just can’t wait to make more.”
